$80K in Marijuana Recovered from Home

KENT, OH — Two people are facing charges after Portage County Drug Task Force officials discovered a sophisticated marijuana grow operation in their basement.

According to Sheriff David Doak, a citizen alerted authorities about the welfare of a 10-year-old child living in the home on Erin Drive.

According to authorities, Task Force Agents recovered 80 marijuana plants with a street value of approximately $80,000 from the basement. Drug paraphernalia and sophisticated grow equipment, including power supplies, lights, fans, filters and humidifiers, along with several boxes of sandwich bags were also found in the home.

Shawn Mitchell, 43, and Michael Genovese, 40, are facing Illegal Cultivation of Marijuana in the vicinity of a juvenile charges, a felony of the 2nd degree, and Endangering Children charges, a felony of the 3rd degree.

Portage County Task Force Agents will seek additional charges once the case is reviewed by the Portage County Prosecutor’s Office and evidence is presented to a Grand Jury.
