GREENWICH, Ohio (WJW) — The Huron County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that an 8-year-old girl died in a house fire in Greenwich Saturday afternoon.

The house fire happened on the 40 block of East Main Street just after noon.

According to a press release from the Greenwich Police Department, callers who reported the fire said they believed someone was still inside the home at the time of the call.

Greenwich police, Tri-Community Fire, North Central EMS and Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene, the release said.

A police officer arrived at the scene and entered the home multiple times before being overcome by smoke. He required medical attention due to smoke inhalation but was later released, according to the release.

Firefighters then arrived at the scene and found the 8-year-old child on the second floor of the home. She was taken to Fisher Titus Medical Center but did not survive.

According to Chief Deputy David Ditz with the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, the house fire is currently under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshals Office and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
