CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The family of a 7-year-old Cleveland boy is praying for a quick recovery Sunday night after he was hit by a car over the weekend on the city’s west side.
Cleveland police tell Fox 8 the accident happened around 9 p.m. Saturday near West 25th Street and Althen Road.
According to family members, Samuel Winters, 7, was playing outside with cousins when he was struck. The boy suffered injuries to his head, face and leg.
“I was very scared. There was a couple of people up the street, down the street,
everybody was out here trying to help him,” said Lakisha Winters, the boy’s aunt.
"My son said he was actually beating on the guy's window telling him to back up off of his cousin, and if he would have turned the wheel, he would have squashed my nephew's head."
The accident is not a surprise to neighbors who explain the one-way Althen Road can be dangerous.
"Too busy, too busy, too much traffic,” said Frank Quinones.
Winters tells Fox 8 the incident serves as a reminder to drivers and children to be extra careful near the street. More children are playing outside and if people aren’t paying attention, accidents do happen.
"Just want everyone to pray for my nephew and hope that we can get a speedy recovery,” Winters said.
Cleveland police have not said whether or not the driver of Saturday’s accident will be cited.
According to a spokesperson at Metro Health Medical Center Sunday evening, Winters is expected to make a full recovery.
He is in good condition.
