CLEVELAND, Ohio — Nearly $50 million in security funding will be provided for the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

According to a press release from Sen. Rob Portman, the funding is included the 2015 fiscal appropriations bill.

“Ensuring the safety of convention goers and the Cleveland community is a critical component of the convention planning process,” Portman said in a release. “These funds will allow convention organizers and the city of Cleveland to ensure that appropriate security measures are being taken. I’m pleased to have worked with Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, Valarie J. McCall, and the entire City of Cleveland team, convention organizers, and members of the Ohio delegation on this critical funding. I will continue to work with all involved as we prepare to host the convention and showcase one of America’s great cities.”

“I would like to thank all those involved in helping Cleveland secure the NSSE Grant, which is critical for us to put on the best possible political convention,” Jackson said in the release. “I would especially like to thank Ohio Senator Rob Portman, Senator Sherrod Brown and our entire Ohio Delegation, for their leadership and ability to help move this grant through the legislative process in such a timely manner. We look forward to hosting the 2016 RNC in Cleveland.”

Nearly 50,000 participants will be involved in the Republican National Convention.
