OXFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP/WJW) — Three students were killed and eight people, including a teacher, were injured in a Michigan high school shooting Tuesday, authorities confirmed.

A 15-year-old suspected gunman was also reportedly arrested without incident.

Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said at a news conference that he didn’t know what the assailant’s motives were for the attack Tuesday afternoon at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, a community of about 22,000 people roughly 30 miles north of Detroit.

Authorities didn’t immediately release the names of the suspect or victims. But two people are currently in surgery and the others injured are in stable condition, McCabe said. A 16-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl were all reportedly killed in the incident.

Police responded at around 12:55 p.m. to a report of an active shooter at the high school. McCabe said police were there within five minutes of the first 911 call. The school reportedly has more than 1,800 students who attend.

The suspected shooter was taken into custody and a handgun was recovered, said the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, which added that it doesn’t think there was more than one attacker.

“Deputies confronted him, he had the weapon on him, they took him into custody,” McCabe said, adding that suspect wasn’t hurt when he was taken into custody and he refused to say how he got the gun into the school.

McCabe said the suspect’s parents visited him where he’s being held and advised their son not to talk to investigators, as is his right.

The school was placed on lockdown after the attack, with some children sheltering in locked classrooms while officers searched the premises. They were later taken to a nearby Meijer grocery store to be picked up by their parents.

The sheriff’s office originally reported that four to six people were wounded in the incident.
