CLARION, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say three people are dead and 30 injured in a highway pileup that occurred in whiteout conditions in western Pennsylvania.
Clarion County Emergency Services director Vern Smith says two people died at the scene on Interstate 80 and a third en route to a hospital.
State police say nine trucks and nine cars were involved in the 1:40 p.m. Wednesday crash in the westbound lanes of I-80 in Clarion Township. The vehicles include several large tractor-trailers.
Smith says heavy snow had reduced visibility to “virtually zero.”
State police say the westbound lanes are expected to remain closed until late Wednesday night.
