Teen boy dead after ‘negligent shooting’ in Akron

***editor’s note: Akron police originally reported two teens were killed in the incident Wednesday night. We have since confirmed with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office that only one teen has died.  The Akron Police Department released the following statement Thursday,  “The Akron Police Department takes pride in only furnishing accurate information. Last night we received inaccurate information from multiple reliable sources that both teens had died at the hospital. The department would like to apologize to the victims’ families. The department feels terrible for the families of the victims of this tragic event and our thoughts are with them during this difficult times.” ***

AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating a shooting involving two teen boys.

According to Akron police, a shooting happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Grand Avenue.

A group of kids were in the basement of the home when police say the 15-year-old boy pulled out a handgun and fired an accidental shot, hitting the 14-year-old boy in the head. Akron police say the 15-year-old then turned the gun on himself.

Both boys were taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, where the 15-year-old was pronounced deceased. The 14-year-old boy remains hospitalized.
