Reverse suspension? School brings parents to class when students misbehave

WEST VIRGINIA — Administrators at middle school in West Virginia are taking a unique approach to student discipline.

WOWK reports that at Huntington East Middle School, non-violent, non-verbally abusive behavior is punished by offering the troubled students’ parent a “reverse suspension.”

Instead of sending the child home, the parent comes to school, spending an entire day by the child’s side.

It seems to work.

The school’s principal says the approach has helped cut student suspensions by two-thirds, and bad behavior incidents by more than half.
