Survey: 28 percent of kids today have to do chores

While most adults say they had to do chores growing up, most don’t require their own children to do them and that could have long-term effects.

A survey of 1,001 U.S. adults by Braun Research last year says 82 percent had chores as children, but that only 28 percent of adults today make their kids do things around the house.

A Wall Street Journal essay cited the survey, the results of which were released last fall.

Experts told the WSJ that giving kids chores helps them develop a sense of responsibility and builds self-reliance skills, along with empathy for other people.

Allowing your child to skip chores for homework or other tasks, experts say, sends the message that grades and achievement are more important than caring about other people. That may have long-term effects, they say.
