Many people interested in joining the military can’t do so because they don’t qualify for service.

According to the Wall Street Journal, more than two-thirds of America’s 17- to 24-year-olds are ineligible because of obesity, lack of a high school diploma, felony convictions and appearance standards (because they have large tattoos or ear gauges).

And that’s just the beginning.

Of those who have graduated from high school, one-fourth aren’t able to pass a qualification test that measures math and reading skills.
