WAYNE, N.J. — A sign intended to get the attention of speeding drivers has reached a much larger audience after it stirred some controversy.

A father of three in New Jersey made it to tell people to slow down.

It reads, “If you hit one of these kids because you are speeding you will not need a lawyer.”  A handgun is pictured at the bottom.

According to News 12 New Jersey, Craig Rovere said speeding in his neighborhood had gotten way out of control, and another sign had been run over.

That one was shaped like a child.

Rovere said his implied threat was empty and he was counting on the sign’s shock value to make an impact.

While there was much support for the sign, there was also some criticism.

It has been removed from a public patch of land where it once stood, but Rovere said it made a difference in the time it was up and the speeding has gone down.
