It’s a statistic that will stop parents in their tracks: nearly half of 25-year-olds in the U.S. are still living at home.

According to the Regional Economist, about 48.8 percent are living at home, and that’s up from only 25 percent in 1999.

So why are more and more young people finding it harder to move out?

Economists found a few reasons, including the job market, student loan debt, which averages more than $28,000, and the expensive housing market.
