BEREA-- At Frederick Roehm Middle School in Berea, the goal is to inspire excellence and promote each student's academic potential.

Reading is the foundation. Through the accelerated reader program, every student in 5th through 8th grade, has 25 minutes of reading time during the school day. Teacher and librarian Rosalyn Pinter-Goffi said the challenge is to read more books.  "By the end of the year, we had read 600,966,669 words. Students read over 13-thousand books to achieve that goal, she said.

As part of a family literacy program, 7th and 8th graders and their families read The Running Dream. It ended with a Dash for Dignity race and raising money for a good cause.  "We presented a check of $6,100 dollars to Southwest General Hospital and two hand crafted Eleanor Rocks rocking chairs," 8th Grader Kelian Disher added.

The Robotics Club helps science come to life. Students learn to build robots and write computer programs to make them work. "Right now we're working on when you clap, it moves and when you clap, it stops," 6th Grader Bilal Haider said.

Music is a "key" component at Roehm Middle School. By sixth grade, students choose to be in band, choir or orchestra.  Eighth Grader Jacob Arnold plays cello. "It's fun playing different instruments. We do different types of activities with the band, and with our electrify program," he added. For the past 11 years, Berea City Schools has been named one of the top 100 communities for music education in the U.S.

In what could be called "caring classrooms," typical peer students pair up with students with special needs.  They work on school work and fun activities, while building friendships and social skills. "I like helping out them because it's really cool," student Nakyah Meadows said.

These students are used to working together. Together they are sending a huge poster hug to Sandy Hook Elementary.  Because caring for others is just one of the reasons that makes Roehm Middle such a Cool School.
