AVON LAKE, Ohio- From the band room to the classroom, the Shoremen pride is showing. Since 2009, Newsweek Magazine has ranked Avon Lake High School as one of the best high schools in the nation. And, now it can add “FOX 8 Cool School” to its list of accomplishments.

The national ranking is based on test scores and academic performance over time. "I just think there is a lot going on in the school, a lot to be involved in, a lot to be excited about.  It makes school much easier and you're actually excited to go to school and you want to learn," senior, Peggy Hudnutt, said.

The strong curriculum at Avon Lake High School leads to 90% of its graduates going on to college. Guidance counselor, Michael Kaminski, said the school offers 16 Advanced Placement classes and 11 college level courses.   “So, like Lorain County Community College courses taught on site – we have a lot of opportunity for our students to excel,” he added.

The latest in classroom technology and online learning also enhances the academics at Avon Lake High School. "Every classroom has an active board and to interact with the students we use active expressions to take quizzes. We also have class sets of iPads and laptops so the students are always working with technology," junior, Keegan Sullivan, said.

The school motto is: 'It takes all of us to build and maintain a positive school climate.' And, those words are put into action at Avon Lake High School.  "Our teachers have a really great attitude.  We are here to learn and our teachers are willing to help us every step of the way," senior, Andrew Willett, said.

And, it's common to hear students cheer “T-S-F-S, Together Shoremen, Forever Shoremen."
