SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio – Summit Metroparks will host FREE programs in July to celebrate the recently completed Towpath Trail.  The Bike, hike and learn on Summit County’s recently completed Towpath Trail!

“The Towpath Trail is a great area for viewing a variety of wildlife in July, including herons, bald eagles, songbirds and amphibians,” said Naturalist Meghan Doran. “Spending a few hours on the trail is a wonderful way to celebrate its completion.”

Summit County is the first to finish the towpath, which will ultimately travel more than 100 miles from Lake Erie in Cuyahoga County to New Philadelphia in Tuscarawas County.


  • Barberton History along the Towpath – Saturday, July 7 at 9:00 a.m. (3.5 mile round trip hike begins at Barberton Trailhead, 5 Fairview Avenue in Barberton)
  • Moonlight Bike Ride and Campfire – Saturday, July 7 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (13 mile family friendly bike ride begins at 1Big Bend Trailhead, 337 Merriman Road in Akron.)
  • Towpath Walkabout – Sunday, July 8 at 9:00 a.m. – (Bring your binoculars to explore the hidden secrets near the Big Bend Trailhead, 1337 Merriman Road in Akron.)
