My Town: Four-Legged Volunteers Needed

AKRON — Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley is currenty accepting applications for its Doggie Brigade.

These four-legged volunteers tour the hallways, visit patients in their rooms and stop in the activity rooms to see children who are well enough to be out of bed.

Applicants must attend both of the workshops below:

Delta Workshop:

Saturday, Feb. 25, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Akron Children’s Hospital
Considine Auditorium
215 W. Bowery St.
Akron, OH

New Dog Screening:

Saturday, March 31, 9 a.m.
Akron Children’s Hospital
Considine Auditorium
215 W. Bowery St.
Akron, OH

A one- time fee of $50, which covers the cost of the educational materials and workshop fees, is required prior to the workshops to ensure a seat.

All dogs undergo a veterinary exam and a behavioral screening to make sure they are suitable for the program.

Once accepted into the program, dog and owner — as a team — earn volunteer credit for their weekly or biweekly visits to the hospital.
