Man sentenced in hate crime for destroying Ohio couple’s home
CINCINNATI— A man convicted of a federal hate crime for destroying a rental property owned by a biracial couple in Cincinnati has been sentenced to 4½ years in prison.
Forty-three-year-old Samuel Whitt pleaded guilty in January to criminal interference with the right to fair housing. He was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Cincinnati.
Prosecutors say Whitt after breaking into home in November 2016 spray painted walls with swastikas, racial epithets, and the words “white power.” They say he also poured quick-drying cement down sink drains and toilets while doing extensive damage throughout the building.
Whitt is also required to pay $66,000 in restitution to the couple and serve a year of home confinement after completing his prison sentence.
One of Whitt’s federal public defenders declined to comment Thursday.
