Neighbors describe ‘strong stench’ near home of person of interest in case of missing Utah student

UTAH — Police have named the owner of a home they searched this week a person of interest in the disappearance of a missing University of Utah student, Fox News reports.

Police Thursday completed their search of a Salt Lake City house as part of their effort to find Mackenzie Lueck, 23, after spending about 19 hours at the home five miles from the park where she was last seen 10 days ago.

Neighbors said that the officers took police dogs and shovels inside the home and removed undescribed items.

Salt Lake City police have said they believe the house had a connection to Lueck’s disappearance but have not said why. Fox News reports that neighbors of the person of interest claimed the person recently was burning something that left off a “strong stench.” No arrests have been made.

Lueck disappeared after taking a Lyft June 17 from the airport to the park, where police say she met someone at about 3 a.m. and did not seem distressed. They have said the Lyft driver had no connection with her disappearance

The home that was searched is in a middle-class neighborhood of mostly older homes on Salt Lake City’s west side.

The owner rented part of the house to short-term renters as an Airbnb home, said neighbor Tom Camomile.

Police said before the home was searched that they had not found any evidence of foul play, but were worried because she Lueck missed classes.

Lueck’s close friend, Ashley Fine, uploaded a new video Thursday morning onto the “Find Mackenzie Lueck” Facebook page saying she believes her friend is still out there. She pleaded with people to call police with any information that could help locate Lueck.

“Everyone around the country is looking for you. We’re advocating for you, we’re fighting for you, and we’re going to bring you home safely,” Fine said.
