Daughter in custody after allegedly killing 52-year-old mother, Cleveland police say

CLEVELAND -- A suspect is in custody following a deadly incident in Cleveland early Thursday morning.

Officers responded to a home on Kewanee Avenue near East 185th Street at around 2:26 a.m., according to the Cleveland Division of Police.

A neighbor told officers that he heard a woman in an upstairs unit screaming  for help.

Police knocked on the unit's door and received no response.  They entered the apartment to find the victim, 52-year-old Donna Ivy, on the kitchen floor unresponsive.

Ivy had suffered blunt force trauma, police say.  An officer on scene tried to render first aid to her.

Officers searched the apartment and located the suspect, 21-year-old Dana Marie Witcher, in a bedroom.  Witcher was arrested.

Police say Witcher is Ivy's daughter.

This case remains under investigation.

Editor's Note: Police originally reported that this incident was a fatal stabbing, however after further investigation the cause of death was determined as blunt force trauma.
