AUSTIN, Texas — A bill proposed in Texas could keep those who receive food stamps from using their benefits on items including soda, candy and other junk food.
News 4 San Antonio reports that the bill would also ban people from any drinks, excluding coffee, with 54 milligrams of caffeine or more per eight fluid ounces.
Any sweetened or carbonated beverage, some potato or corn chips, cookies and candies would also be included. Users could still buy fruit or vegetable juices.
The bill was filed by Rep. Brisco Caine, of Baytown, Texas.
