I-77 south near I-90 closed due to crash involving tanker full of lye

CLEVELAND, Ohio - I-77 south is closed between I-90 and East 30th Street for cleanup following a crash.

A tanker carrying lye was involved in a crash around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Cleveland Fire tells FOX 8 the tanker truck's tires caught fire, which caused the crash.

Lye is a metal hydroxide, typically used as a cleaning agent. It can also be highly corrosive.

No one was hurt.

Cleveland police tell FOX 8 a HAZMAT specialist cleared the scene, but the Ohio Department of Transportation and an environmental cleanup contractor are still working.

Cleveland police reported the road was expected to reopen around 1 p.m.

ODOT still has an alert indicating emergency crews are on scene.
