Cleveland Indians tie Reds in spring training match-up, officially sign Tyler Clippard

GOODYEAR, Arizona – The Cleveland Indians began cactus league play as they took the field Saturday in Goodyear, Arizona, against the Cincinnati Reds.

It was the first chance to see the team since a number of off-season player changes.

Here was the starting lineup for Saturday’s game:

1. Allen CF
2. Bauers 1B
3. Ramirez 3B
4. Naquin RF
5. Joyce DH
6. Luplow LF
7. Perez C
8. Flaherty SS
9. Stamets 2B

The game began at 3:05 p.m.

Tyler Naquin, in the second inning, got the Indians first home run of the spring; it was a solo shot, making it 1-0 Indians.

Later in the inning, Ryan Flaherty, playing shortstop for the injured Francisco Lindor, sent one to deep center that scored Roberto Perez from first. The Indians led the Reds 2-0.

The Reds were up 3-2 in the 6th, when Eric Haase lifted one to left, deep enough to score the run from third and we tied the game at 3.

And, that’s how it ended. The Indians scored 3 runs off 7 hits.

They will host the diamondbacks Sunday in Goodyear.

Earlier this week, FOX 8’s John Telich reported that the team unofficially signed Tyler Clippard.

The club made the deal official Saturday afternoon. The right-handed pitcher signed a minor league contract with a non-roster invite to major league spring training camp. Clippard is 34 years old.

He spent last season with the Toronto Blue Jays finishing 4th in the American League in games pitched with 73. He posted a season era of 3.67.
