NEW FRANKLIN- A domestic violence call ended with an officer shot and the suspect dead.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, the New Franklin Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident at a home on Menlo Court.
According to the New Franklin Police Department, when officers arrived they discovered a man had barricaded himself inside a bedroom with a loaded handgun.
Officers spent three hours trying to convince the suspect to come out and give himself up. At 11 p.m. Thursday, the Barberton SWAT Team, which has members from the New Franklin, Norton, and Barberton Police Department arrived to assist.
At around 3 a.m., after several more hours of trying to negotiate with the suspect, authorities say a SWAT team officer was struck by a round fired by the suspect through the door.
Other SWAT team members returned fire and pulled the wounded officer to safety.
The officer, a 12-year-member of the Barberton Police Department, was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital where he is expected to have surgery. His injuries are said to be non-life threatening.
