Teen takes own life after ‘accidentally’ shooting another teen in Akron basement

***editor’s note: Akron police originally reported two teens were killed in the incident Wednesday night. We have since confirmed with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office that only one teen has died.  The Akron Police Department released the following statement Thursday,  “The Akron Police Department takes pride in only furnishing accurate information. Last night we received inaccurate information from multiple reliable sources that both teens had died at the hospital. The department would like to apologize to the victims’ families. The department feels terrible for the families of the victims of this tragic event and our thoughts are with them during this difficult times.” ***

AKRON, Ohio — A teenage boy reportedly took his own life after accidentally shooting and another teen in Akron Wednesday night.

According to Akron police, it happened around 7 p.m. in the 200 block of Grand Avenue.

Detectives say several teens were in the basement of the home when it happened. A 15-year-old male pulled out a handgun and accidentally fired a shot striking a 14-year-old male in the head.

15-year-old  Arnez Kendrick, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition. His identity has not been released.
