Aretha Franklin takes National Anthem to new lengths

DETROIT– The Queen of Soul may now be the queen of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

Aretha Franklin belted out a lengthy version of the National Anthem before the Lions played the Vikings at Ford Field on Thanksgiving. The Detroit native, now 74 years old, sang for 4 minutes, 35 seconds.

The average length of the last 10 Super Bowl anthems is 1 minutes, 57 seconds, according to In 2013, some thought Alicia Keys’ rendition at Super Bowl XLVII at about 2 minutes, 30 seconds was too long.

We’re still trying to figure out if Aretha’s was the longest ever.
