Local tree crew member killed while cleaning debris from Hurricane Matthew

ORMOND BEACH, Florida- A Garrettsville man has died while in Florida cleaning up from Hurricane Matthew.

47-year-old Steven Barna was in Florida working with Falls Tree Company of Chagrin Falls to assist with tree clean-up from the hurricane.


Barna and his crew were working to remove debris and cutting trees in the Halifax Plantation community near Ormond Beach in Volusia County when the accident happened around 6 p.m. Monday.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department, Barna was cutting a tree that was already on the ground when a large piece of the tree rolled on top of him, pinning him underneath.

A passerby spotted the victim  and yelled out for help. Co-workers who were working nearby rushed to his side, pulled the log off of him and started CPR.

Sadly, Barna was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is under investigation.
