MASSILLON-The Massillon Police Department is hoping to help a little girl brutally assaulted and beaten earlier this week.
The 9-year-old girl was walking home from the library Monday around 4:30 p.m, when a man pulled up, claimed to be a police officer, told her she had been reported missing and forced her into his truck. Police say the suspect, Dennis L. Menefee, 46, of Port Washington, then took the child to a nearby parking lot where he sexually assaulted her and beat her.
Menefee faces charges of rape, kidnapping, assault and aggravated menacing in the case. He was issued $2 million bond in court Friday.
Now the police department and community want to do something kind for this little girl who endured such a horrific act against her.
According to a recent post on their Facebook page, Sgt. Muntean wrote, "Many of you have asked about a type of fundraiser to help the victim of the horrific crime we recently investigated. We've received phone calls, emails, and Facebook messages inquiring about how to help. I spoke with the family this morning, and told them that the police department and members of the community have been asking about how they can help this little girl. We learned that her dream was to go to Disney World (Orlando). As Cpt Paul Covert said, "She's already been in the worst place. We'd like to send her to the best place". I cannot agree more. I'm looking to see how many people would be willing to donate funds to make it happen. We would set up an account at a local bank. The goal would be to send their family of two adults and three children to Disney World.
I already got a phone call from Brent Bordner of Patriot Towing and he already said to put him in for a minimum of $1,000 donation. Wow.
Please post under comments below or if you feel better sending us a private message, that's fine, too. At this point, there is no account set up, but we would make that happen very soon, and we would post an update on our Facebook as to where / how those donations can be sent.
God Bless all of you...
Here is the bank information for the account and the different ways you can donate:
1) Send a check payable to: “Massillon’s Lil’ Hero” to Farmers National Bank at 211 Lincoln Way East Massillon, OH 44646 (Ph# 330.832.7441).
2) Walk into any Farmers National Bank location and give them cash or a check payable to “Massillon’s Lil’ Hero”. Note: If you want a receipt for tax reasons, they advise you take your check or cash in person into one of their branches. (There are two in Massillon. One is listed above and there is one on the west side of Massillon at 2312 Lincoln Way NW Massillon, OH 44647 (Ph# 330.833.1622).)
In addition, a web link is being set up so people can donate online. That isn't complete yet and the police department will release that information when it is.
As of Monday, when the bank account was officially opened, nearly $1,200 had already been donated.
For more information on how you can help, call the Massillon Police Department at (330) 832-9811 and ask to leave a voicemail for Sgt. Muntean.
