LAWRENCE, Massachusetts — Police in Lawrence, Massachusetts hope a video that shows a mother overdosing inside a store with her two-year-old child next to her will show the horrific consequences of drug use.
The incident happened Sunday inside a Family Dollar.
According to WFXT, police say the video is a key piece of evidence in charging the woman with child endangerment.
Investigators believe the woman overdosed on an oral version of heroin or an opiate-based narcotic like fentanyl.
It took two doses of Narcan to revive her.
“It’s very, very disturbing to see someone obviously in the matter of addiction, where it overtakes someone to the point where they’re not able to take care of their child, leaves their child vulnerable,”James Fitzpatrick, Lawrence Police Chief, told WFXT.
Fitzpatrick said children are involved in about 10-percent of drug situations his officers respond to.
The little girl is now in protective custody.
Her mother is expected to face charges by the end of the week.
There was a similar incident in East Liverpool, Ohio earlier this month. A police officer snapped a picture of two people passed out in the front of a vehicle with a four-year-old in the back seat.
