ELYRIA, Ohio– The location of services for Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Kenneth Velez has been changed.

Velez will lay in state at the field house at Lorain County Community College in Elyria from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Funeral services will be at the same venue at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Velez will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

The 48-year-old trooper was conducting traffic enforcement outside of his patrol car on Interstate 90 west near Warren Road on Thursday. That’s when he was hit by a car swerving to avoid another vehicle.

Velez started his training with the Ohio State Highway Patrol in 1989, and spent time at the Canfield, Elyria, Warren and Cleveland posts. He recently celebrated his 48th birthday and is survived by his three children.

Joshua J. Gaspar, 37, of Columbia Station, was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the crash.
