ROME, Ohio -- Law enforcement sources confirm to the Fox 8 I-Team that a man was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Ashtabula County.

The Ashtabula County Coroner's office has identified the man as Michael S. Martin, 36.

Authorities originally said a female was killed during the incident.

The shooting happened in the Miller Road and Dodgeville Road area in Rome.

Police say it all started with an armed robbery at 3 a.m. outside of a home in the Rock Creek area. The suspect robbed a juvenile at gunpoint, but got away.

A deputy tracked the suspect to a home on Dodgeville Road. Deputies approached an SUV in the backyard not realizing there were people inside the vehicle. When the vehicle drove off, deputies opened fire.

The SUV then crashed into a nearby utility pole. The coroner's office said Martin was hit by a gunshot and also had a head injury from the crash, so the exact cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is complete.

Officials say the man driving-- Martin-- was killed; a woman inside the SUV was not hurt. She's being questioned by authorities.

A gun was found in the SUV. It's unclear if the suspect fired the gun. Ashtabula County Sheriff Bill Johnson said Martin has a lengthy criminal record, and is known to deputies.

No deputies were injured.

The deputies involved are on administrative leave, as is policy in such incidents.
