Cleveland Browns’ Robert Griffin III talks Baylor teammates, starting quarterback
BEREA, Ohio– Baylor University is making its mark on the Cleveland Browns offense this season.
The team’s first-round draft pick Corey Coleman hails from Baylor, as does rookie lineman Spencer Drango and veteran quarterback Robert Griffin III. When wideout Josh Gordon returns from his suspension, that will be four Baylor Bears on one side of the ball.
“We enjoy the fact that we all get to play together,” Griffin said. “It’s fun, but it’s not our main focus. We’re Cleveland Browns now. We’re here to help resurrect this team”
While there was little overlap in their time at Baylor, the group has established relationships.
“I know Corey. I was leaving Baylor as he was a recruit coming in. I went back to Baylor a bunch. So I know Corey really well. I know what he’s about, know what drives him. Same with Josh,” RGIII told reporters on Tuesday.
Griffin is impressed by the wide receiving corps, which he said has no shortage of speed. He also called Terrelle Pryor’s transition from QB to WR “phenomenal.”
“It’s been fun the experience of getting to know the rest of the receivers in what drives them, what they do well, what motivates them.”
As for the players vying to be the starting quarterback job, RGIII said it’s not the first thing on his mind.
“You just have to focus on what you can control,” Griffin said. “You come out every day with the same mindset to get better, continue to improve. You can’t control when coach makes a decision, how he makes a decision. One thing we all know is that we have each other’s back.”
Griffin has been taking a majority of the first-team reps in practice.
