NEW YORK – Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been notified by the NFL that he has been reinstated on a conditional basis.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Gordon Monday that he can join the team for training camp, meetings, conditioning work and other similar activities. As soon as the league confirms that he has clinical resources in Cleveland, he will be allowed to participate in all preseason activities, including practices and games.

β€œWith the league’s decision to afford Josh the opportunity to resume his career, he will be with us for the start of training camp. At that time, we will discuss directly with Josh the direction of our team, our expectations of our players and a plan to support him on and off the field,” said Sashi Brown, Browns executive vice president of football operations, in a statement Monday evening.

Gordon will still be suspended for the first four games of the regular season, and will be eligible to return to the team on Oct. 3. During his actual suspension times he will be able to attend team meetings and other activities but won’t be allowed to attend or take part in practices and games.

He had been suspended indefinitely since February 2015 for a number of violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Goodell wrote to Gordon saying, “As we discussed at our (July 19) meeting, as Commissioner, I want nothing more than to see you turn your circumstances around and succeed. Countless others including your agent, teammates and coaches, Mr. Haslam and the leadership of the organization, the Program professionals and Jim Brown also have pledged to provide you with every resource at their disposal. But as you acknowledged, ultimately, your future is your responsibility. I have every belief that you can make the right choices, but it will be up to you to do so.”
