LORAIN, Ohio — More than 20 firefighters laid off in Lorain will return to work starting in August thanks to a $3 million federal grant.

The grant was announced at a meeting Wednesday morning.

It will go into effect in August, and the money will sustain expenses for at least two years.

City officials also plan to put an issue on the fall ballot that would generate additional revenue to fund the department for the long-term.

The firefighters were laid off earlier this month as Lorain city leaders deal with a $3.6 millio deficit.

The department currently has less thanĀ 50 firefighters and has closed three of the city’s four stations.
