ELYRIA - It has been more than 6 years since Elyria police officer James Kerstetter was killed in the line of duty.

And on Saturday morning, an annual charity run took on a much deeper meaning following the deaths of 5 police officers in Dallas.

Officer Kerstetter was killed in the line of duty on March 15, 2010 in an ambush-style attack, he left behind a wife, three daughters, parents and siblings who wanted to carry on his legacy of giving.

During the annual Kerstetter 5k Run & Family Fun Walk, nearly 1,000 runners participated.

135 of those runners were police officers from Elyria, Lorain, the Lorain County Sheriff, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Cleveland FBI, Westlake and North Olmsted.

All of the money raised from each year's event goes to a scholarship fund in Kerstetter's name.
