CLEVELAND-- A routine stop nearly turned deadly for a pizza driver.  He was robbed and shot while making a delivery.

Marcus Brown, Jr., 26, delivers pizza for the Papa John's on Chagrin Boulevard in Shaker Heights.  Just after midnight Wednesday, he was delivering two pizzas to an address on Biltmore Avenue in neighboring Cleveland.

"I call the customer, 'Hey, I'm outside with your pizza.' So he's like, 'OK, give me two seconds,'" Brown said.

He said he was early, so he waited.  Then he saw four guys walking down the street and two approached his car.

"When they approached me I'm like, 'Hey, do you got the pizza?' or whatever and he like, 'Yeah, that's us' so I'm like, 'OK, well you, know it's 24.35.' But instead of pulling out money, he pulls out a gun, cocks it back and he's like, 'Gimme everything you got,'" he said.

Brown told the men he did not have any money, but he said one of them went through his pockets as he stood next to his car.

He said after the other man punched him, he told the robbers he would get money for them out of the car.

"Instead, I was gonna just pull off, so I guess he sensed that. And he started hesitating and he got like, he got real upset when I start trying to head towards the car. So as I'm getting in the car, he just fires one and he hits me right here in the leg and it went right through," Brown said.

Brown said the men ran off and because it was so dark, he couldn't get a good description of them.  He was taken by ambulance to University Hospitals.

"It wasn't a major hit. It was really all flesh. It was just in one side and out the other," he said.

Brown, the father of a 6 year old, has delivered pizza for Papa John’s for about three months. He said the police told him the address he was given is for a vacant house.

"You gonna shoot this person over $20? You gonna go to jail over $20? Why?" he asked.

Brown spent a few hours at University Hospitals before he was released.

He said after he recovers, he has no problem returning to work delivering pizzas.

Cleveland police said they are investigating, but have not made any arrests.
