It’s that time of year when school is out for the summer. But vacation can actually be a burden on parents.

The New York Times reports that parents report planning to spend an average of $958 per child on summer expenses.

Those who can’t afford summer camps or learning programs need rely on care from family or friends or are forced to leave children home alone.

Self care also increases during the summer months, with 11 percent of children at spending an average of 10 hours a week on their own.

It has many asking if it would be better just to get rid of summer vacation.

The NYT reports that countries like Germany and Britain gives their students six weeks off during break. Some schools in the United States have class year-round.
