BAKERSFIELD, Ca. — A man’s Facebook post about an alleged “bad brake job” at a Jiffy Lube in Bakersfield, Ca., that resulted in his vehicle being totaled has gone viral.
Carl Brewer’s ordeal began when he took his Toyota 4Runner to be serviced at the chain’s Oak Street location for a routine brake replacement on May 12 after dropping off his toddler, he told local television station KERO Wednesday.
The technician replaced the brakes, then took the SUV out for a test drive.
While the technician was driving the vehicle, all four wheels apparently “flew off,” which caused the SUV to crash, Brewer told the station.
He stated that the lug nuts had apparently not been properly fastened and fell off during the test drive.
“My truck was totalled (sic),” he wrote in a Facebook post that included photos of the damaged vehicle. It has since been shared thousands of times.
In the post, Brewer said the company refused to pay for a rental car unless he paid out-of-pocket first. He added that the district manager was being forced by corporate to take care of the costs.
Jiffy Lube said that they are now working with Brewer to resolve the issue, releasing a statement to KERO that read, “We certainly understand the seriousness of this event and are working diligently and directly with the guest to resolve the matter.”
The statement continued: “We are committed to ensuring that our processes and procedures regarding quality and training are reinforced so that such an incident does not happen again. Please know that this is our top priority to correct this and earn your trust once again.”
The incident occurred on the manager’s first day on the job, according to Brewer, who said the manager was very apologetic.
