BEDFORD - School Pride is showing at Bedford High where students are proud to be a Bearcat. Bedford High is also proud of its continuing academic success. Over the past five years, the school's performance index has increased to 94%. This is one way the state measures a school's academic improvement.
"We offer a variety of classes, but the classes that mostly set you up you know for college level are the Honors and AP classes. And, we offer a variety of those. Like me, I take AP Chem and AP Gov and these are very rigorous classes,” 11th grader Kevin Thompson said.
The academic opportunities range from students in the resource center who receive individual instruction to University Bound Scholars. These are students aspiring to attend the top schools in the country. UBS is a unique program for students with a 3.5 GPA or better. They learn about higher education and they even go on college tours. “We try to find out as much as possible before going there. That's what happens in the classroom. This fall we'll be going to Boston. We'll see Syracuse, MIT, Boston College and Harvard,” 11th grader Maurice Ward added.
Bedford High is well known for its music programs. Many students find these extra-curricular activities add to their overall education.
"We like to give back to our community a lot. The bands, all the music organizations, we like to give our gift out to the people and I think that's probably the most important thing we accomplish as a program," 10th grader Avandre Sayles said.
Achieving the highest education at Bedford High may best be found when students follow the five "well" principles of leadership. They are well read ... well spoken ... well balanced ... well dressed and well-traveled. And, these five "wells" make a well-rounded Bearcat.
That sums up why Bedford High is this week’s Fox 8 Cool School.
