Suspect in Westlake High School beating appears in court

CLEVELAND - An 18-year-old Westlake High School student was in court Monday on charges of  felonious assault  stemming from a brutal beating at Westlake High School.

Deandrew Smith was arrested  after the a video of the fight at Westlake High School was posted to a Twitter account.

Smith entered a plea of not guilty and was ordered to have no contact with the victim. His bond was set at $5,000. His next court appearance, in Judge Kathleen Sutula's court, is May 12.

The fight between a 17-year-old junior and  Smith happened just before 1 p.m. on April 12.  School staff found the younger student lethargic in the men's restroom.

The victim was seen by the school nurse. Later, his family took him to Fairview Hospital, and he was taken by medical helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center. Westlake police said he suffered very serious head injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.
