CLEVELAND – More Cleveland water employees have been fired for tampering with meters.

Water Department officials tell the Fox 8 I-Team that a total of nine employees have been fired since an investigation began in March when one employee’s account was flagged for possible tampering with meters.

The department then started an internal audit and found other employees who had tampered with meters. Officials said as a result of the meter tampering employees were getting lower bills.

So far this year, Cleveland Water officials identified about 300 meter tampering cases.

Many are still being investigated. Anyone caught tampering with meters will have water service disconnected and will be required to pay a tampering fee plus other costs, before their water service will be restored.

Water Department officials say they do not know how long it will take to complete the investigation.
