FLORIDA – One mother is trying to warn other parents after she nearly lost her son.
Tiffany A. Rivera told CBS News that her son Jaden was riding his bike without his helmet earlier this month when he fell off. The 10-year-old only complained about his elbow and a scraped knee.
Just two days later, Jaden woke up extremely groggy.
“He woke up and was completely lethargic — didn’t want to move,” Rivera told CBS News. “That’s unusual for my son; the moment he wakes up he’s running around the house.”
Jaden started vomiting on the way to the hospital and immediately got a CAT scan when he arrived.
Doctors told Rivera that Jaden had fractured his skull and there was blood forming between his skull and an outer protective lining. She was told Jaden had a ’50/50′ chance of making it.
After a 3-hour surgery and 32 staples, Jaden was in much better shape.
“Normal cases like his, kids would have already been dead,” Rivera said. “He went to sleep… twice.”
Now, she is urging other parents to be more careful and have their children always wear helmets.
