ARLINGTON, Massachusetts — In a beautiful tribute to their friend who passed away of cancer, a group of teenage girls will wear their friend’s prom dress.

According to ABC News, 16-year-old Catherine Malatesta died in August, just months after being diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma, a rare and slow-growing tumor.

After her death, Catherine’s friends were at her home, when they noticed the beautiful blue gown she wore to her junior prom. Catherine’s friend, Emma Schambers, said, “We all tried it on and we said, ‘Oh my gosh; we should all wear this’…I think it’s really magical that we all fit into the dress.”

Emma will wear the dress to her senior prom; Catherine’s childhood friend, Jillian, already wore the dress to her junior prom. Two other childhood friends, Lauren and Carly, will also wear it.

Emma said it’s very important to them to do this. She told ABC News, “If she was alive, I think she’d offer her prom dress to us. It’s a very important thing to capture her memory because prom was a very special time for her. She told her mom, it was the first time in a long time that she felt beautiful inside and out.”
