WESTLAKE, Ohio -- An 18-year-old Westlake High School student appeared in court Tuesday to face a felonious assault charge.

Deandrew Smith was arrested last week after a fight at Westlake High School. His bond was continued in court Tuesday.

The fight between a 17-year-old junior and  Smith happened just before 1 p.m. last Tuesday, police said. School staff found the younger student lethargic in the men's restroom.

The victim was seen by the school nurse. Later, his family took him to Fairview Hospital, and he was taken by medical helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Westlake police said he suffered very serious head injuries.

The victim was released from the hospital over the weekend.

Smith is also facing unrelated rape and kidnapping charges in juvenile court.

The rape charge stems from an incident in August, according to a Westlake police report.

Smith is expected to be in juvenile court Wednesday.
