HOUSTON, Texas — A mom-to-be is getting creative when it comes to maternity leave: she is relying on the help of others.
KHOU reports that Kieri Andrews’ employer does not offer paid time off for new parents. So a friend set up a GoFundMe page hoping to raise $2,000 to help her with bills since she won’t be working for six weeks.
They admit not everyone has been a fan of the fundraising.
The page has raised over $330 so far.
KHOU reports that according to the United States Department of Labor, only 12 percent of those working in the private sector are given paid leave. Nationally, the Family Medical Leave Act allows you to take 12 weeks off, but doesn’t require that time be paid by employers.
