Chardon tutor accused of inappropriate relationship with student appears in court

CHARDON, Ohio-- A Chardon Local School District employee faced a judge Wednesday morning.

Ty Merkle, a part-time tutor and coach, was arrested at Chardon High School on Tuesday. He's is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student and charged with sexual battery, which is a third-degree felony.

The judge set his bond at $50,000.

School officials said he is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the case. In a statement on Tuesday, the district said it has, "No tolerance for any behaviors that put our students at risk."

Merkle passed a background check when he was hired in 2012.

While the Geauga County Sheriff's Office does not know if there are more victims, they are asking anyone involved to come forward.
