CHARDON, OH – A male staff member at Chardon High School was arrested on Tuesday after allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Members of the Geauga County Sheriff’s office went to the high school Tuesday morning to take Ty Merkle, a part-time tutor and coach into custody. Merkle has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Chardon Schools says that a background check of Merkle was completed in 2012 and did not indicate any convictions that would be precluded employment with the school district.

The school district released the following statement:

We value the trust that our parents place in us, in the care and education of their children, and have no tolerance for any behaviors that put our students at risk. Our students’ safety and security is always our utmost concern.
We are working with law enforcement to handle this matter in a thorough yet timely manner.
Merkle will be arraigned Wednesday morning.
