PENFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH –  Two people were killed after their car drove off a road in Lorain County early Sunday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says that Benjamin Metzger, 25, of Litchfield, was driving a pick-up truck east on State Route 18 near Indian Hollow Road at around 12:30 a.m. when he lost control of the car and drove off the side, into an embankment and hit a tree. He and his passenger, Jeremy Leiter, 24, also of Litchfield were declared deceased when emergency crews arrived.

The Patrol reports that unsafe speed contributed to the crash. Metzger was not wearing a seatbelt, and it hasn’t been determined if Leiter was.  It is also not known if alcohol played a part in the accident.

The deadly crash remains under investigation.
