AKRON, Ohio– Family and friends gathered at an Akron church on Saturday to mourn the loss of a local firefighter and police officer.

Kenny Ray Jr., 32, died on Sunday at the Faircrest Plant of TimkenSteel in Canton. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said exposure to nitrogen was likely the cause of his death.

Ray worked as a fire technician at the facility. He was also a firefighter/EMT with the Uniontown Fire Department for 11 years and an officer at the Atwater Fire Department since February.

The funeral was at Maranatha Bible Church in Akron with a last alarm ceremony performed by local firefighters. It was followed by a procession past the Uniontown Fire Department on Oakwood Avenue to Hillside Memorial Park.

Donations in Ray’s honor can be made to the Kenny Ray, Jr. Fund at any First Merit Fund.
