WHITE CENTER, Wash.– A man carrying a hatchet was shot and killed inside a Seattle-area convenience store.

A masked man started swinging a hatchet inside a 7-Eleven in White Center, Washington Sunday morning, FOX 13 reported. The suspect went after a customer, then turned his attention to the store clerk.

That’s when the customer pulled out his pistol and shot the attacker, who remained silent throughout. The suspect died at the scene.

“Fortunately, because of this customer with his weapon, this could have been a lot worse,” said King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West. “The clerk could be the one laying there dead on the floor right now.”

According to FOX 13, the 58-year-old clerk suffered minor injuries to his stomach. The clerk said the customer is a regular and was drinking his morning coffee when the incident occurred.

Investigators said he has a concealed-carry permit.
