WICKLIFFE, Ohio– A bank robbery suspect didn’t make it far before he was apprehended by two Wickliffe officers on Friday.

Matthew J. Ditto, of Cleveland, told everyone inside the Chase Bank on Euclid Avenue, “This is a robbery,” Wickliffe police said. After a teller filled a plastic bag with cash, the 38-year-old got away in a Dodge pick-up truck.

But Ditto’s timing was bad. According to the police department, an officer was conducting a money escort at a local business just 7 minutes earlier. The patrolman heard the suspect’s description from dispatch and spotted his truck on Ridge Road.

The officer tried to pull over Ditto, who continued driving until he reached a dead-end street. He jumped out of the truck and ran though a wooded area until two cops caught up to him.

The Wickliffe Police Department said Ditto shoved the stolen money down his pant legs.

He was charged with robbery, and fleeing and eluding. On Monday, he was arraigned in Willoughby Municipal Court, were his bond was set at $100,000.
